How it’s calculated

  • Taxable income = income − the standard or itemized deduction − the senior, tips and overtime deductions
  • Tax = each bracket’s rate × the part of taxable income inside it, added up
  • Long-term gains and qualified dividends sit on top of other income at 0%, 15% or 20%
  • Effective rate = tax ÷ total income; your bracket is the rate on your last dollar

Example: Single with $75,000 of wages in 2027: taxable income is $58,400 after the $16,600 standard deduction, and the tax is $7,389.50: 10% of $12,800, 12% of $39,225, 22% of $6,375. That is 9.9% of income in the 22% bracket. The same pay in 2026 owes $7,670.00.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 2027 tax brackets?

Seven rates, 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. For single filers in 2027: 10% up to $12,800, 12% to $52,025, 22% to $109,125, 24% to $208,325, 32% to $264,550, 35% to $661,375 and 37% above. Married filing jointly: 10% up to $25,600, 12% to $104,050, 22% to $218,250, 24% to $416,650, 32% to $529,100, 35% to $793,650 and 37% above (IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-35).

What is the standard deduction for 2027?

$16,600 single or married filing separately, $33,200 married filing jointly and $24,925 head of household, up from $16,100, $32,200 and $24,150 in 2026. People 65 or older or blind add $2,100 each if unmarried, or $1,700 each if married.

When do the 2027 brackets apply?

To income earned from January 1 to December 31, 2027, on the return filed in early 2028. The return filed in 2027 uses the 2026 brackets.

How much did the brackets go up for 2027?

About 3.2% for single filers and 3.2% for married couples: the 10% bracket ends at $12,800 instead of $12,400 single. The 37% rate starts at $661,375 single, $793,650 married filing jointly and $661,350 head of household, against $640,600 single, $768,700 married filing jointly and $640,600 head of household in 2026.

How do tax brackets work?

Only the income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket’s rate. Moving into a higher bracket never lowers your take-home pay: single with $75,000 of wages in 2027, the 22% rate applies only to the part of taxable income above $52,025, so the whole tax is $7,389.50, 9.9% of pay.

Is there an extra deduction for seniors?

Yes, for 2025 through 2028: $6,000 for each person 65 or older, less 6% of income over $75,000 ($150,000 married filing jointly), on top of the standard deduction and its 65-and-older addition. A married couple, both 65, with $100,000 of income owes $5,656.00 in 2027 instead of $7,504.00. Married people must file jointly to take it.

What is the child tax credit for 2027?

$2,300 for each child under 17, up from $2,200 in 2026, with up to $1,800 of it refundable. It shrinks by $50 for each $1,000 of income over $200,000 ($400,000 married filing jointly).
