How it is worked out

  • Net earnings = net profit × 92.35%
  • Social Security = 12.4% of net earnings, up to $184,500 less W-2 wages; Medicare = 2.9%
  • Taxable income = profit + wages − half of SE tax − standard deduction ($16,100 single) − 20% QBI deduction
  • Quarterly = the smaller of 90% of this year’s tax and 100% (110%) of last year’s, less withholding, ÷ 4

Example: On $60,000 of 2026 profit, single: self-employment tax is $8,477.73, $4,238.87 of it deductible. After the $16,100 standard deduction and a $7,932.23 QBI deduction, taxable income is $31,728.91 and income tax $3,559.47: $12,037.20 in all, or $2,708.37 a quarter.

Frequently asked questions

How is self-employment tax calculated?

Net earnings are 92.35% of your net profit. Social Security takes 12.4% of that up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500 (less any W-2 wages), and Medicare takes 2.9% with no cap. Earnings above $200,000 single or $250,000 married filing jointly also pay the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax.

Can I deduct part of self-employment tax?

Yes. Half of your self-employment tax is deducted from income when you work out income tax, which is the deductible half shown here.

When are quarterly estimated taxes due for 2026?

April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. A due date that falls on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day.

Do I have to make quarterly payments?

Generally yes, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year after withholding and credits (IRS Form 1040-ES). A W-2 job can raise its withholding to cover it instead.

Does this include income tax?

Yes. It runs the 2026 return in order: half of the self-employment tax comes off, then the standard deduction and the 20% qualified business income deduction, then the 2026 brackets from Rev. Proc. 2025-32. Credits, itemized deductions and other income are not included.

What is the safe harbor for estimated tax?

You avoid the underpayment penalty if withholding and estimates cover the smaller of 90% of this year’s tax or 100% of last year’s total tax (110% if last year’s AGI was over $150,000). Enter last year’s tax and the calculator uses whichever is smaller.
