About these financial statements

How to use this tool

  1. Fill in sales and costs for the period. The profit and loss builds as you type.
  2. Add what the business owns and owes for the balance sheet, and the start of the period for the cash flow statement.
  3. Read the ratios, then download every statement as one PDF.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the three statements?

The profit and loss (income statement) shows whether you made money over a period. The balance sheet shows what the business owns and owes on one day. The cash flow statement shows where cash actually came from and went, which is why a profitable business can still run short of cash.

Do I need all three?

No. Fill in only the profit and loss for a P&L on its own. Add the balance sheet for the ratios lenders check, and the start-of-period balance sheet (or mark it a new business) for the cash flow statement.

What is EBITDA?

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization: profit from day-to-day operations before financing, tax and wear-and-tear on equipment. Lenders and buyers use it to compare businesses. It is shown on the profit and loss as soon as you enter sales and costs.

How is owner’s equity worked out?

As total assets minus total liabilities, so the balance sheet always balances. On the cash flow statement, any change in equity that net profit does not explain is shown as money the owners put in or took out.

Can I build this from my bank statements?

Yes. Upload them to the bank statement analyzer, then choose Make full financial statements under its profit and loss. The sales and costs carry over here for you to check.

Is this an official or audited statement?

No. It is prepared from the figures you enter. Have an accountant review it before you rely on it for a loan, investor or tax filing.
